Riserva dello Zingaro: useful tips

We will try to synthesize, giving you some practical and useful advice to walk in complete safety along its paths.
The first advice among all is to start with trekking shoes or trainers and long trousers in any season. In fact, it is not unusual to encounter thorny bushes or shrubs and insects.
Always bring water reserves with you and protect your head with a hat. The sun is high and warm, even in the milder seasons.

there two main entrances to access the Reserve: North side, from San Vito Lo Capo, and south side from Scopello (Castellammare del Golfo).

Riserva dello Zingaro: the two inputs

From the North entrance opens the show on the enchanting Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo. You will see it when you arrive and you will have a bath in its transparent waters, reachable in ten minutes, without going through too many gradients. It is no coincidence that it is the busiest during the summer season.

If you go through the paths, you will find quieter bays: Cala Uzzo, Cala Marinella, Cala Beretta, Cala della Disa, Cala del Varo and last Cala Capreria, the first you meet if you choose the South entrance.

From the South entrance, after crossing a tunnel, dug into the rock, you will reach Cala Capreria after about 20 minutes of walking. Turquoise reflections meet the white pebbles polished by the sea, this show will accompany you along the coast path.

Take all the time to walk along the Zingaro trails. Every nuance of landscape will capture your attention. The vegetation around you, the paths, the caves, the Museums.
Take advantage of its beaches to cool off, small green and white oases.

The coastal path
it is the simplest, least impervious. The one-way distance from anywhere you start is about 7 km, which can be traveled in no more than 2 hours (one way). The duration of the route may vary if you decide to visit all the coves.
The landscape that predominates is that of the low scrub, broom and thyme, almond and ash trees, carob trees and disa. Uncontaminated nature, one step away from you.
In Spring and Autumn, the Zingaro can be fully enjoyed as it is not too crowded.
The coastal path is enchanting in its chrome of contrasting colors. The rock and the water, the white stone and the green of the dwarf palm, sprayed as if on a canvas of an abstract painting, all the way. Scattered throughout the Reserve you will also find equipped areas to stop.

The half-way path
, of medium difficulty, has a duration of about 4 hours for a journey of 8,5 km, is the most scenic and will allow you to enter along the paths that lead to the upper part of its territory.
For this path we reach the Borgo Cusenza e Contrada Cork. Here there are shelters for the bivouac.
It is possible to request authorization from the Reserve, in the period from October to May.
In Spring the paths are flowered with enchanting species of orchids. The wooden fence marks the detours for other routes. The choice is yours, how to proceed.

Path near Cala Marinella

The high path It is definitely the most challenging. We recommend it exclusively for hiking enthusiasts and experts.
Paths uphill, surrounded by broom, for a path of 17 km and a time of about 7 hours, traveling from north to south, the peaks of Monte Passo del Lupo (868 mt), Monte Speziale (914) and Monte Scardina (680).
The mountain landscape: Aleppo pines and holm oaks. From the top of these mountains, the visitor will admire the glimpses that open towards the sea in the distance and can be enchanted in front of its breathtaking colors.

You are crossing one of the most beautiful coastlines of Italy. Live it fully. It is a miracle that one can only cross on foot, that there are no means to bring you into his heart.

A miracle wanted the May 18 1980, when more than 3000 people occupied the path, sensitizing the Region and avoiding that this territory, still intact, was sacrificed to the cement.
