The temptation to stop will be strong. It is a curiosity that is worth fulfilling.
Entering the piazzetta of Scopello you can immediately breathe an enchanted atmosphere. Looking towards the mountain your gaze will spontaneously aim at a tower located on a rock. It is about Torre Bennistra. The advice is to reach it and see it up close. Getting there, even if the route is uphill, will be easy. In just 20 - 30 minutes of pleasant walk you can reach it and admire, from above, a breathtaking landscape.
To reach the tower you start from the piazzetta di Scopello, where the fountain is located, turn left and walk along the street called the access road to the Bennistra tower. After about 200 mt. you will meet the CAI report which indicates a dirt road. In a few minutes you will be at the top of the fortress.
La Bennistra tower, located at 202 mt above sea level, overlooking a spectacular view. Located on the top of a rock formation, the tower dominates the whole Gulf of Castellammare and allows to range from Riserva dello Zingaro at Capo Gallo.
Looking towards the Borgo di Scopello the ancient is also visible Tonnara with its elegant and powerful stacks.
Torre Bennistra is a classic lookout post dating back to the 14th century. It is a very interesting architectural testimony with a cylindrical shape, characterized by a single compartment.
It was part of the defensive sighting system of Saracen canals and was in visual connection with the Tower of Capo Rama and with the Alba Tower of Terrasini to the east. Also with the tower of Guidaloca, with the Tower of Scopello, with the Torre dello 'Mpiso, on the west side of the Gulf of Castellammare.
